Organizer of the trail running race “Grand Trail de Jugurtha”, which will take place on November 3rd, an association from the city of El Kef will permanently mark out a running trail and a hiking circuit on the Jugurtha Tableland site.
The
Jugurtha Tableland, in
Western Tunisia, is a site of striking beauty. This tabular 80-hectare mountain, surrounded by steep cliffs, stands in the middle of a large plateau. It is said that the Numidian chief Jugurtha once withstood there a siege by his Roman enemies…
On November 3rd, this unique site will welcome for the second time a 30-km race, the Grand Trail de Jugurtha. 120 participants, Tunisians and foreigners, are expected (Canada, France, Morocco, Belgium). It will be preceded on November 2nd by an entertainment program in Tajerouine (37 km south of El Kef) introducing El Kef’s heritage: cuisine, equestrian art…
Marked trails
The organizers of the race decided to set a permanent marked path for trail running amateurs. It will allow them to prepare themselves for major international events thanks to its technical terrain with a 1,300-meter elevation gain.
A marked track for hikers will also be set up. It will include information panels and stations indicating the most beautiful viewpoints.
All these achievements are part of a bigger project called Siccaveneria (the ancient name of the city of El Kef). They are supported by the “Association Culture et Développement” and funded by the European Union.
One more step to make Western Tunisia, a region of unspoilt nature and rich cultural heritage, a true destination for outdoor activities and sports.
It should be remembered that the same association organizes the “Sicca Jazz” festival, awarded by the Jasmin d’Or of cultural tourism during the
Tunisia Hospitality Awards 2019.
